SURROUNDINGS
2 (pag. 3)
From
the Fountain of Savuco we can go along the way that leads
to the valley.
Before continuing on our route, we must stop to “Our
Lady of the Wood”, a charming rural church that today
is a private property: it was built on a rise of the Cardinale’s
wood from which we can admire all the beautiful landscape
of the valley crossed by Orato stream.
Coming back on the road we get to the valley of the Orato
stream, where the view goes in rapture not only for the natural
beauty of the place, but also for the ruins of the
.Abbey .called .Our

located a little church built after the discovery of a statue
of Our Lady, hidden here to protect it from iconoclasti (726-842),
and after her appearance of Madonna herself through the branches
of an old holm-oak.
Over the centuries, the fame, the prestige and the richness
of the monastery increased and in the XV century it became
a little suburb formed by about 500 people and among them
there were notaries and jurists. In 1597 the suburb was thoroughly
destroyed, and although the abbey was spared it soon went
ruined, being not inhabited yet.
