ITINERARY
2 (pag. 2)
So
we arrive in front of the old spinning mill characterized
by an eighteenth century stone stairway and a beautiful carved
volute.
Going ahead along St. Antuono Street we can see on the right
a great lodge formed by ten arches and the great stone portal
of Berrilli’s palace. It was donated to the “S.S.
Redentore” confraternity of Materdomini by Father Francesco
Maria Margotta from Calitri, then bought in 1749 by three
brothers, Canio, Francesco and Giovanni Berrilli (the latter
was a priest).
St. Gerardo Maiella was part of the confraternity from 1726
(it was founded in same year by Saint Alfonso
.Maria .De’ Liguori)

often came to Calitri with Father Margotta.
Tradition says that just during one of his visit, hosted by
Berrilli family, he worked some miracles.
For this reasons a XIX century statue of the Saint is situated
in the not far Church of St. Antonio Abate, protector of animals
and revered in Calitri that was (an still is) an agricultural
town.
So we arrive to the little church dedicated to St. Antonio
Abate, one of the oldest church of Calitri.
It was built close to the castle and during the centuries
has had many restorations because of a succession of earthquakes.
